Make your social media experience fun

The comparison game on social media can be real. Here’s my take on a healthy and fun social media experience:

1. Post for yourself. If you’re focused on how many likes or comments you’ll get, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment. Post because you want to share something. Maybe its a gorgeous sunset over the lake or your kids acting like goofballs. Post for you. Share because the memory is important.

2. Don’t let social media replace real interaction. Social media is meant to be just that — social. But seriously, it’s not meant to replace face-to-face conversations so don’t get sucked in too far!

When I hear people ranting about how much they hate social media, my first thought is always this: you must not be following the right people/businesses/groups. I’ve found so many cool things on social media because of the accounts I follow. There once was a time when Facebook was exclusive to college students and you had to use your college email address. I remember when High Point University sent me my email address and                     🎉hallelujah 🎉 I could join FB. (Who else remembers this?) That’s hardly the case anymore. If you scroll through your newsfeed and only see updates from friends, well,  you’re missing out. Literally everything and everyone is on social media. Your experience should be a little different from everyone else’s so there aren’t any hard and fast rules about who to follow but here are some of my favorites.

Follow the right accounts

Celebs + News. Singers, movie stars, entertainers, they’re all on there. If there’s one you really like, it’s fun to see behind the scenes and peek into their daily life. Social media is also a great way to stay up on the world’s happenings.

My FB faves: People, Today Show
My IG faves: Carrie Underwood, Joanna Gaines,

Your passions + interests. I love fashion and I literally follow a million fashion bloggers on Instagram. I constantly get outfit inspiration from talented people. I’ve really gotten into exercising so following fitness programs online motivates me and gives me lots of ideas. Fashion and fitness might not be your thing but think about what is and find a few accounts to follow.

My FB faves: Female Fit Body, Nifty,  Fitness Tips and Tricks
My IG faves: Latisha Springer, LIKEtoKNOW.it

This phase of life. When I was an aspiring blogger, I followed lots of blogger pages and groups. Right now I have several mom-accounts I’m really into. Brides-to-be could find tons of resources on social media. Wherever you’re at — let social media help out.

My FB faves: Her View from Home, The Mom Edit
My IG faves: Modern Burlap, The Every Girl

Local. Following local groups, pages, and businesses is the best way to know what’s going on. We were recently hanging out with friends and we were all chatting about a Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ event in our area this spring. We all knew about it from Facebook.

My FB faves: Hickory Macaroni Kid, Fourk,
My IG faves: Casey Clark Music

Inspirational. I’m a huge fan of following people and things that will inspire me. What might make some people roll their eyes because it’s cheesy, makes me double tap. Anything that regularly posts Bible verses is a good one, too because they seem to pop up at just the right time.

My FB faves: Lysa Terkeurst, K-LOVE Radio ,  Toby Mac
My IG faves: First 5 App, Daily Bible Verses

Bahahaha. It kind of goes without saying but I think that if you’re not seeing regular memes, you’re missing out on what life has to offer 😉

My FB faves: The 21st Century SAHM by Karen Johnson, Ellen DeGeneres,
My IG faves: The Fat JewishSome Ecards

Just follow places and people you already like because it’s a way to be connected regularly.  I know lots of people are really into Twitter and I use it for business reasons but haven’t really gotten into it on a personal level… yet. I’d love to know if there are people or pages you follow that aren’t on here! I’m always up for new finds 😊

  • I love this post, Claire!! Great thoughts/ advice!

  • I love Lysa TerKeurst! This is all great advice, especially posting for yourself!

    • Her stuff always hits me right between the eyes.

    • Lysa’s stuff has a tendency to hit me right between the eyes, just when I need it 😉

  • This is such good advice! I try to make the social media accounts I follow ones that make me think “I could do/wear that” rather than ones that make me think “I’ll never be able to…” That way I’m getting inspiration, not jealousy. It’s definitely what makes social media fun! I have hidden a few friends on facebook so I don’t see their posts in my feed if they don’t fit the vibe haha. I like that you can still stay friends but skip all the complaining and ranting and angry posts! :)

Hope you are having a great weekend :)

    • Yesss! I love that feature on FB where you don’t have to see their posts. That’s such a good point about inspiration vs. jealousy.
