Maxi skirt + top | that actually wears like a dress

Would you believe me if I said that I really tried to come up with something to post about other than a maxi skirt?  On the real, I looked back through a few drafts I have saved, a few pictures that have caught my attention on Pinterest.  And… nada.  Nothing.  It just wasn’t working.

I was inspired to recreate this look because I saw several people wearing black maxi dresses with a cardigan over it.  So in order to curb my apparel envy, I just paired the black maxi skirt with a black tank.  Ta-da… you can’t even tell the difference.

Just in case you’ve missed out on my maxi inspiration as of late, here’s a few looks to catch up on: the pink flowered maxi, the black and white striped maxi.

Diversity must not be in my vocabulary at the moment.

Head over to Artwork by JM to check out an interview I did with Julie!

    • Thanks, Andrea! This necklace is another staple in my spring wardrobe!

  • So cute! I would have never known that wasn’t a dress haha

    • Trying to get creative over here!!

  • I actually thought you mis-titled your post because it looks exactly like a dress!! I love those shades on you girl! xo, Biana –BlovedBoston

    • Sounds like something I would do… But not in this case.

  • There is nothing better than a maxi and I love seeing all of your looks! This is such a cute look and that necklace is fab!

    • Thanks, Jill. Just trying to get on your level 😉

  • I am loving all of your maxis lately! I have been wearing mine constantly, I can’t help it! They are just so comfortable! Love how you paired it with the black tank to create the illusion of a dress, and those leopard flats are so cute

    • Same, girlfriend! When I wake up, I’m like… is it too soon to wear this maxi again? Surely it’s been a week since I wore it. That’s enough time, right?

  • It looks like a dress to me!

I’m maxi deficient. I have one skirt and one dress and they’re both just okay on me.

    • A few years ago, I was in the same boat. I didn’t really like the one dress I had. And then something just clicked and I fell in love!

  • You really can’t tell the difference! Love that necklace, too.

    • I thought this was probably a better solution {for my wallet and closet space, anyway} than buying a black dress.

  • Cute, friend!!

    • Thanks lady. Just trying to mix it up a little!

  • Cute outfit and necklace!!

    • I’ve been trying to find new ways to wear things in my closet.

  • How cute are you in your maxi skirt?! I actually can’t believe I haven’t thought of owning a plain black maxi skirt before now… Love the look! I’m definitely on the hunt for one, now!

    • You won’t regret it!!!

Love that this is actually a top and a skirt yet it totally looks like a maxi dress! And you can’t go wrong with maxis in spring and summer, so perfect!

    Sequins & Sea Breezes

    • Agreed. I’ve been wearing them like crazy recently!

  • Maxi’s are always a good choice! Especially a versatile black one!

  • This is brilliant!! I can’t tell that it is a black tank + maxi either, I thought it was just a black maxi dress. You rock! And you look great!

  • What a great idea! Who needs a maxi dress when your top and skirt look this good together!?

    • Right? That’s what I’m telling myself, anyway.

  • Hi Claire! I just stumbled upon your wonderful blog and wanted to say hello. I love the ‘tulip’ detail at the bottom of your skirt. I’m very petite and I find that showing just a bit of leg with a maxi looks helps me look taller, so I love that detail! My co-blogger and I would love to have you check us out sometime over and inPSYCHfulliving.com, where we dish about mindful beauty, style, and living tips!

    • Thanks for stopping by, Alison. I bet the tulip detail would look great on you :)

  • Super cute!! I have been wearing maxis a lot lately too – love wearing them to work, so comfy!!

    • So perfect for those mornings when you don’t really feel like working the “professional” look.

  • Super cute…it totally looks like a dress! :)

    • I was wondering how it would turn out in pictures. I liked it in the full length mirror in my bedroom but sometimes photos are a little different. Glad it’s working!

  • This is such a great idea! And a perfect way to add versatility to a plain black maxi!

    • You know me all too well, Kelly. Versatility is key.

  • Mica

That is a great way to wear a maxi skirt! It really does look like a dress! :)

I love maxi skirts and dresses too, sometimes I can definitely get into a maxi-skirt ‘rut’ as well! But hey they are cute and comfortable, what’s wrong with loving wearing them a little too often? :)

    Away From The Blue

    • Right? I just pretend I don’t know the definition of “a little too often.”

  • I love pieces that can be worn multiple ways it’s seriously the greatest thing ever.
